Ribbon anodes are a thin, wire-like strip of zinc metal extruded around a centralized galvanized steel wire core. This steel wire core is firmly bonded to the zinc outer shell to ensure electrical path continuity.

Zinc, being the sacrificing element in zinc ribbon anodes, contributes to a very simple, cost-effective and maintenance-free corrosion control method for buried or immersed metals such as iron, steel, aluminum or copper.

Zinc ribbon anodes are ideal for remote applications, where impressed current cathodic protection systems or constant monitoring is not feasible. They are commonly used in passive cathodic protection of metallic structures in confined spaces or high resistivity locations, such as underground carrier pipes within sleeves, closely spaced pipe networks, pipelines in rocky and mountainous terrain, wells with limited space between inner and outer casings, interstitial spaces between old, corroded and new storage tank bottoms, or narrow spaces where the anode needs to be wound around the protected structure.
